简介:Often seen as a key to understanding Elizabethan poetry, Sidney's persuasive treatise follows the rules of rhetoric in presenting evidence of the virtues of poetry. Sidney argues with wit and irony that poetry is the art, which best teaches what is good and true. This seems a fitting argument for this prominent experimental poet who himself is said to have represented 'life and action good and great'.

简介:Shelley continued the romantic concept of "nature is divinity" and integrated Keats' death into the natural cycle - in the poem, "the west wind," "the waves," "the flowers," and "the stars" all become mourners: "The flowers of spring will shed tears for you,/The west wind will sigh for you," but this mourning is not despair, but a ritual of "life returning to its natural mother. He believed that although Keats' body had passed away, the "beauty and truth" carried in his poetry (as Keats advocated, "beauty is truth, truth is beauty") would blend into nature and eternity like Adonis was reborn from ashes, becoming an "immortal spirit".
